Mommy Bloggers are my favorite influencers. They love hard. They work hard. They play hard. Mothers, in general, have the hardest job on the planet. Imagine having to teach a human being from inception how to walk, talk, eat, potty , etc. all while being completely sleep deprived covered in baby food and who knows what else. I'm not a Mom, but I am a daughter.
Being the first child in my family, I have been blessed with a plethora of stories regarding my no sleeping antics as a newborn from my parents and Godparents. Hilarious doesn't even begin to cover it. My hat is tipped to every mother everywhere!
Written by Diablo Cody and Directed by Jason Reitman...TULLY film picks up where JUNO left off shedding a more than realistic light on life after baby arrives, as opposed to the idealized one often emulated on film. Tackling everything from postpartum depression completely with insomnia to the challenges of handling a "quirky" offspring to a husband who has no clue what it takes for you to survive on a daily basis with little to no assistance, Tully takes us on a journey of what one would say to their younger self if given the opportunity.
Would you say don't get married? Would you say - you might want to get that body tight after that first kid! Or, would you simply say that no matter what make sure you take care of YOU?
A brand new Mommy herself, Charlize Theron portrays Marlo such grit, fearless reality as a mother of three including a newborn that you never not want to see her on-screen. When Marlo is gifted a night nanny by her brother (Mark Duplass), the eye-rolling judgement sitting on her face is all too familiar, yet hilarious. Hesitant to the extravagance of the gift at first, Marlo comes to form a unique bond with the thoughtful, surprising, and sometimes challenging young nanny named Tully (Mackenzie Davis). When I tell you that Mackenzie Davis is awkwardly amusing, it would not be an exaggeration. But, yet there is a subtle hippy like sexuality that she exudes which is perfect for this character.
Charlize Theron has never been one of those starlets who stayed away from a part because it wasn't glamorous. With Marlos, she goes in full-throttle with raw emotion and an uncomfortable physicality that fully helps someone like me understand the mental and physical toll going birth can be on an entire family.
Being a ginormous Theron fan, it will come as no surprise that I loved this movie for all the aforementioned reasons. If you are a Mom or Mom-to-be you will be glad that someone finally gets it. If you are not a Mom, take one of your friends with kids to give them a break from their life for just a minute. Produced by Focus Features and Bron Pictures, Tully opens nationwide on May 4th.
