Ocean's 8 is a Stylish Heist with an All-Star Cast of Flick Favs
/The Ocean's franchise is back featuring an all-star female cast of flick, tv and recording favorites - Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter, Sarah Paulson, Mindy Kaling, Awkwafina and Rihanna, who hold their own individually and as a unit.
Debbie Ocean (Sandra Bullock) has been incarcerated for nearly ten years and upon parole contacts her bestie Lou (Cate Blanchett) to embark upon the heist of a lifetime - stealing the famed Touissaint necklace during the Met Ball Gala. Each doll has their specialty. Mindy Kaling is the jewel expert, Rihanna - a computer/IT wiz, Awkwafina - a pick-pocket of epic proportions, Sarah Paulson is a stay at home Mom who hustles goods out of her garage and Helena Bonham Carter is a washed up fashion designer.
What is interesting about this film is that they pull back the curtain on how much detail goes into planning this popular annual event. They even manage to grab a few cameos from Serena Williams, Common, Kim Kardashian, Heidi Klum, Elliott Gould, Marlo Thomas and the Queen of Vogue - Anna Wintour. Now, I know you are wondering if the Toussaint necklace is real? Yes, indeed!
According to Harper's Bazaar, the necklace was created in 1931 by Jacques Cartier and was named after the fashion house's iconic creative director of the 20th century, Jeanne Toussaint. The main stone in the necklace was the 136.25-carat Queen of Holland diamond, a massive blue-white rock that dates back to 1904. Since 1931, the Toussaint necklace has been taken apart and its diamonds have since been used in other jewelry pieces. Today, the blueprints for the infamous necklace remain at Cartier along with plenty of photographs and archival drawings. So, yes, the Toussaint necklace is real, but the version fans see in Ocean's 8 has been more than a little modified from the original.
Ocean's 8 is a little slow for the first 2/3 of the film, however, when the heist begins is it a pure comedy and loads of entertaining fun and intrigue. The only real problem I had is that Rihanna was made out to be a Rasta smoking a "Cheech & Chong" type joint, which was so incredibly stereotypical, but the character is redeemed rather quickly, so I got over myself...LOL
Produced by Warner Brothers Pictures, Ocean's 8 opened this weekend grossing $41.5 Million dollars garnering a little less than the all-star female cat of Ghostbusters a few years back which grossed $46 Million.
