Robin Williams: Come Inside My Mind

A few years ago, I attended a live-taping of "The Odd Couple" in which the creator Gary Marshall loved to interact with the audience during taping breaks.  He shared tale after tale of all the now famous people he discovered from Julia Roberts to Henry Winkler to Robin Williams.  Williams had just passed a few weeks before and Marshall gleefully spoke of how Williams' character of Mork was born on "Happy Days" because his son wanted to see a martian on the show.   Mork from Ork was only the beginning for the shooting comet we knew as Robin Williams.

Robin Williams was hands down one of the most creatively, rapid-fire comics to ever grace the entertainment industry.  Diagnosed with early onset Parkinson's and Lewy-Body Dementia, Williams took his own life in 2014.  The world was heartbroken and it felt like that was the day laughter truly died a cruel death.  After all, this is the same person who said, "...you're only given a little spark of madness...if you lose that...you have nothing."

Robin Williams - Come Inside My Mind takes us inside the life of this comic genius from his own lips through various interviews and sound bites over the years covering those humble beginnings in Detroit all the way to Comic Relief with his life-long pals Billy Crystal and Whoopi Goldberg.

Williams had two brothers and it's clear that his wacky sense of humor comes from his mother combined with a healthy obsession of his comic hero Jonathan Winters.  But, the most endearing part of this doc is that fact that if Robin was your friend...he was a friend for life.  His circle was small...but loyal.  His dearest friend, Billy Crystal summed it up best "...everybody wanted something from him...had an agenda.  I didn't.  I just liked him."

If we have learned nothing else from his existence, we have learned to "Seize the day...make your life extraordinary."

Robin Williams:  Come Inside Your Mind is a loving, gentle tribute to a giant not only in the entertainment industry but in realm humanity itself.  His presence will be missed, but thank goodness we have hundreds of images and footage to pull up whenever we need a good laugh.  After all, nobody was better at that than Robin.   Robin Williams:  Come Inside My Man will debut on HBO in the Fall of 2018.
